Introduction Do you ever feel like taking a break from the monotonous daily routine and getting a break from reality, an urge of getting lost in a whole different world? A world of fantasy and adventures? What about being a superhero and saving the world? Sounds magical, right! It can even be the idea of getting to know the real world from a different perspective, getting to know the world’s history, the unique facts of the world and the people living in it. Well, reading can help. It will take you from those magical lands to superheroes, from comedies to politics, from mysteries to being a detective, from fiction to horror, the first civilisation to the latest scientific discoveries and whatnot. Something that people seem to enjoy saying a lot! Is this, however, correct? According to a recent Pew survey, over three-quarters of Americans (74%) read at least one book in 2017. With 67 percent of Americans reporting to have read at least one print book in the previous year, print remains the most preferred format. So, what's different now? People are consuming books in a variety of ways currently that they have more options. More than ever before, we're reading eBooks and listening to audiobooks. Is this really that shocking? Even though people are busy, they still enjoy reading. Daily readers know that reading makes them happy and appreciate losing themselves in a good novel. We don't really need an excuse to pick up a book, do we? However, if you're looking for reasons to like reading or simply want to find ways to let people know about its importance for our overall well-being, we've compiled a list of facts that you'll find interesting. Reading gives you not only freedom of thought but also a lot of positive outcomes. Successful people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, Jack Ma, and many others have admitted that reading has helped them a lot in their journey. It is a good exercise for your mind which has positive effects. But when was the last time that buzz of notification didn't stop you from reading? Something to ponder upon. We allot a huge portion of our time on social media rather than books. Social media is designed for multi-tasking, whereas reading is the art of doing one thing at a time and helps us with increasing our concentration. You can't absorb what you read when you have other thoughts in your mind. Reading brings you tranquillity along with many other benefits. Here are some of them: 1. Reading enriches your vocabulary Have you been in a conversation where you want to make it impactful but fail due to a lack of vocabulary? Reading gives you the privilege of having a good vocabulary. When you read a book, your entire focus is on the story—the rest of the world fades away, and you can fully immerse yourself in every minute detail. Having a good focus is what you need to learn something new. When you read, you get immersed in it, and no other thought enters your mind. This becomes a habit, and even while working, you are focused on one particular thing without switching between many tasks. And it will eventually make your days more productive. When you read a book, you must remember a variety of characters, their background, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the different arcs and sub-plots that run throughout each novel. That's a lot to remember, but brains are amazing things, and they can retain these facts very easily. Reading builds your character Reading gives you exposure to different thoughts, giving it a wider range and variety. It helps you become a person with an independent thought process. You start self-awareness and know yourself better. You learn how to prioritise things in your life and take hold of it yourself. It helps you develop values in life that you find important and grow through them. It formulates a better connection with oneself and others, helping you understand the world in which you live. 6. Reading helps your imagination power All the inventions man has made until now were once an imagination. And reading is the major source that empowers our imagination. When we read about various science fiction stories, our mind automatically starts thinking of ways it can be a reality. And possibly it may become the next invention! Reading books definitely provides food for thought. 7. Reading decreases stress No matter how much stress you're under at work, at studies, in your personal relationships, or a variety of other areas of your life, it all fades away when you're immersed in a good story. A well-written novel can transport you to other worlds, while an interesting article will occupy your attention and keep you in the current now, releasing tensions and helping you to unwind. When we sit to read, our muscles relax, and our mind leaves all the chaos residing in it. People who read daily have a lower stress level. A decrease in stress leads to a better body, healthy habits, and a clean mind. During times of anxiety and depression, reading self-help books will help you take hold of yourself. Reading beneficially, rewires your brain. 20-25 minutes of daily reading can calm you, lower your blood pressure, make you self-aware, and eventually help you become a better person. 8. Entertainment, Entertainment & Entertainment Although many of us enjoy purchasing books to annotate and dog-ear sections for future reference, they can be fairly costly. You can visit your local library for free entertainment and revel in the grandeur of the numerous times available there. Libraries feature books on every topic imaginable, and because they rotate their stock and get new volumes regularly, you'll never run out of things to read. Most libraries offer their books available in PDF or ePub format, so you may read them on your e-reader, iPad, or computer screen if you live in an area without a local library or if you're mobility-impaired and can't get to one easily.
