SUMMARY:Janmashtami
DESCRIPTION:Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna. It is celebrated all over India and a few places across the world by Hindu communities. The festival falls on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the Sravan month of Hindu calendar. Generally\, it is observed in August as per Gregorian Calendar. \nKrishna Janmashtami is also called by various names such as Gokulashtami\, Srikrishna Jayanti\, and others. Lord Krishna is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  \nKrishna is the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. But he was raised by his foster parents Yashoda and Nandu. \nThe celebration of this festival includes bhajans\, processions\, recitation of holy books like Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita. The most popular event of the festival is “Dahi Handi” in which people gather to break the earthen pot fixed at a certain height from the ground. Devotees also observe fasting\, singing\, night vigils (Jagaran) and visiting Krishna temples. Women draw little footprints outside their house doors\, the footsteps welcoming Lord Kirshna walk into their homes. “The sole and foremost reason for celebrating this festival is bringing people together to strengthen unity”.
