SUMMARY:International Yoga Day
DESCRIPTION:International Yoga day started it’s celebration globally in 2015.   Every year on 21st June\, the world celebrates International Yoga day to spread awareness on yoga practices and its health benefits. The word ‘yoga’ means union or to join\, and  was derived from the Sanskrit language.’ \nYoga is an ancient physical\, mental and spiritual practice\, which renders calmness\, confidence\, and courage to people. Yoga is practised in numerous forms worldwide. Yoga renders holistic healing and is considered as a huge stress buster. \nHistory \nInternational Yoga Day is also renowned as World Yoga Day. It was first celebrated on 21st June 2015. On 27th September 2014\, our honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi gave a miraculous yoga-related speech in the United Nations Assembly which drew support\, prominence and declaration of International Yoga day by Kutesa\, the President of the UN assembly. The proposal gained the support of more than 170 countries and the United States approved it on 11th December 2014. \nWhat did Mr Narendra Modi say in his speech? \nYoga is an indispensable gift of India’s old tradition. It unites body and mind\, thought and action\, man and nature. Yoga is the best approach to the physical and mental well-being of an individual. The objective of yoga is not just exercise\, but to discover the sense of unity with yourself\, world and nature. By adapting the yoga in lifestyle and creating consciousness\, it can help in dealing with climate change. \nWhy is this celebrated day on June 21st?  \n21st June is the day of the summer solstice (when the sun begins to move from north to south) and this transition period is considered as the best time for meditation purposes. \nThe theme of International Yoga Day 2020 \nConsidering the circumstances that COVID-19 has brought to the world\, the 2020 theme is – Yoga at home and yoga with family. According to this\, people will be asked to perform yoga at home with families while following the social distancing protocols and wearing masks. \nDid you know? \nSwami Vivekananda introduced yoga to the western world\, and after that many western scholars and eastern gurus spread it to such a large extent that it is studied in the form of a subject as well. \nIn 1893\, Swami Vivekananda delivered his famous speech on Indian religious traditions at the Parliament of Religions\, in Chicago. It won him an immense adoration from the Americans. While he was spreading awareness of ancient Indian spirituality in the west\, he found yoga to be a great idea to aid him in the process. In the summer of 1894\, Vivekananda included the concept of Neo-Vedantic yoga (drawn from Indian texts and western science) to his curriculum based on the fact that a large number of people in America crave for a personal experience of Indian spirituality. It appealed to a large number of Americans. In 1895\, he established the Vedanta Society in New York\, which is still there.
