Non-Verbal Communication

Non-Verbal communication is sending, receiving, and interpreting ideas without the help of language and words. It comprises the exchange of knowledge, opinions, and information through facial expressions, hand gestures, eye contact, and social cues. Non-verbal methods of communication can be used in both formal and informal interactions. The non-verbal style of communication could be a deal-breaker if ignored by the speaker. Methods of Non-Verbal Communication The non-verbal style of communication opens multiple ways to share a message with the receiver. Gesture or Body Language Gestures refer to the movement of a particular part of the body to express something. Humans mostly communicate through the motions of hands, head, and face. The sign language used to communicate with deaf people is an example of a gesture form of non-verbal communication. Touch The touch form of communication involves physical contact between the sender and the receiver. The exchange of information through touch is delivered by sharing handshakes, high-fives, kisses, etc. Touch-type communication is initiated to set up a warm and welcoming environment. Space Space refers to the distance between the sender and receiver. Space is an essential aspect of nonverbal communication as it shapes the nature and flow of the discussion. Suppose someone's personal space is violated during a conversation. In that case, they are likely to feel uncomfortable, leading to miscommunication and, for example, putting a fence around your garden to mark up your area and possessions. Eye Contact Eye contact refers to two people looking at each other simultaneously. Eye contact plays a vital role during the communication cycle. However, one must know when to initiate and break eye contact. Intense eye contact during the conversation shows attentiveness and interest. The teacher staring at talkative students during class is an excellent example of eye contact communication. Paralanguage Paralanguage includes tone, pitch, volume, and manner of speaking during a conversation. These factors play a role in the successful interpretation of the message. Speaking in a low voice in a crowded area will be a hurdle to communication, whereas it will be encouraged in libraries and hospitals. Visual Communication Visual communication is transmitting and interpreting messages through visual perception. It includes visually appealing elements that target our eidetic memory (ability to recall an image from memory with high precision for a brief period after seeing it only once, and without using a mnemonic device.). Paintings, presentation slides, advertisement billboards, and videos are typical examples of visual communication. Offer a gentle handshake showing confidence. Keep your arms by your side. Place your feet firmly on the ground while walking. Keep your head up. Keep your shoulder relaxed down. Listen to the speaker attentively. Nod while listening to the speaker. Don’ts of Body Language Don’t be overconfident. Don’t look away while conversing. Do not drop your shoulders. Don’t lean forward or backward while sitting. Do not touch your face often. Do not lean on the wall or any other object. Do not get close to your listener.
