Picking the right genre

In this lesson, we will learn what genre to read and choose the perfect book. Do you sometimes feel that Something is wrong with you while reading a book? Why are we reading this? Why do we feel such things? It is because we are confused about which genre/book to choose from. What does genre mean? A genre is a particular type of movie, writing, or film. In this video, we will talk about the writing genre that is the genre for books. In easy and simple words, we can say that a genre is a collection of fiction, mystery, thriller, romance, health, motivational, science, etc. Let’s talk about some of them. MYSTERY These are detective novels that involve a detective to solve a case from start to end. There are hidden clues, and following these clues, the detective solves the case, which makes us into a detective too as it excites them to learn about the culprit. Mystery novels have an exciting start, keep us interested with suspenseful tracks, and have a satisfying end that answers all the reader’s questions. HORROR Horror novels are meant to scare and shock us. They come with the themes of death, demons, evil spirits, and the afterlife. In horror fiction, plot and characters are tools used to create fright between us. SCIENCE Sci-fi novels have stories with imaginative elements that don’t exist in the real world. Some are inspired by natural sciences like physics, chemistry, and astronomy; others are inspired by social sciences like psychology, anthropology, and sociology. Common topics of sci-fi books are time travel, space exploration, and futuristic societies. The two types of readers: ACCIDENTAL READER INTENTIONAL READER Accidental readers are those readers that just start reading the book without thinking whether it will benefit them or just waste their time. Let’s look at an example. We ask someone to read a book, and they start reading it. After one week, when we ask them some deeper questions related to the book, will they answer? No, it will be impossible for them to answer as we haven’t mentioned the reason why we asked them to read it, and due to that, they didn’t read with focus. They just gave a read to the book, which didn’t provide them with useful insights. Intentional readers are those who choose a book with a focus in their mind that it will benefit them in the present and future. Let’s look at an example. If someone wants to work on his business skills, then he will choose books relating to business, and those books will improve their knowledge and definitely help them without wasting their time. Why do we read books? We human beings have a habit of doing everything for a reason. We don’t believe in ideally lying down and wasting our time. That’s what makes us different from other living things on this earth. There must be some reason for reading books. Let’s focus on some of them Entertainment For entertainment purposes, we read fiction genres that include romances, mystery, horror, thriller, etc. These are mostly read when we need to feel relaxed after a long tiring day. This genre really helps when we are stressed or feel anxious. It helps people to connect with each other more and broadens their thinking too. Inspiration Most of the people in their life need inspiration. Inspiration really helps people to work harder, do good and achieve their goals. Books with inspiration help people to work for themselves and make a better future. When people read such books, they come to know the hardships of life and work hard. Biographies, family sagas, spirituality are the genres that definitely inspire us and are one of the most important reasons why we like to read. How-to How to concentrate, become rich, and detox our body are some How-to that compels us to read books. We all have some ambitions and desires in our lives, and we all want to work hard for them. Reading books and gaining knowledge and practising it in our life will help us achieve success. Hence for our own happiness and achievement, we read books. Knowledge The most powerful and healthy way to gain knowledge is by reading books. Reading books expands our imagination as well as intelligence. Every time we read books, we come to know about different facts and stories and information. It also improves our vocabulary and stables our thinking. Our writing skills also improve as we come to know different words. So, now we know why we read books or why we should read if we haven't started yet. It has many advantages. Now, we need to know which books to read as reading anything useless won’t help us but only waste our time. How to choose the right book? This is a very important topic to understand and reflect on. Choosing a book that helps us in gaining knowledge as well as that saves our time too is a blessing. Let’s see some tips to choose the perfect book to read Author If we are regular readers, then we know how to judge a book as we identify the book by its author. We are familiar with the author’s writing style and can guess whether it will interest us or not. For example: When we think of Agatha Christie, mystery and detective novels come to our mind, and if we like that genre, then we will definitely give a read to her books. Again, for Shakespeare, romance novels come to our mind. Reviews Reviews are one of the most important points considered when we are choosing a book, but it should not be trusted hundred per cent. It may be possible that a book may not be loved by all, but we may like it. Reviews should only be considered when we do not know the genre or author. Good reviews can often help us understand and appreciate a book better. Reviews by people who had the opposite reaction - i.e. they hated the book can also be thought-provoking, as they might point out stuff that we should notice when reading. Subject Here comes the intentional reading that we discussed earlier. We should try to read books relating to a particular subject so as to master the skills that we lack. For example: If we lack leadership qualities, then we should read books that help us to know how to be good leaders.
